Since its beginning in 1972, the SAS has helped hundreds of thousands of people and their pets. SAS educates citizens regarding responsible pet ownership; provides clean, safe, and humane housing for impounded animals; unites adoptable animals with new responsible owners; provides a low cost spay/neuter program and enforces animal control ordinances relating to the leash law, scoop law, nuisance-barking, vicious animals, and cruelty to animals. The shelter is located in the Interbay neighborhood of Seattle between Magnolia and Ballard on 16th Avenue West (one mile south of the Ballard Bridge).

Help the Animals Fund
The Help the Animals Fund was established in 1977 to provide much-needed veterinary care and supplies for sick, injured and abused shelter animals. The fund also supports a variety of other programs, such as public education, and the SAS volunteers and foster care programs. Currently, the shelter receives extremely limited funding from the City of Seattle for veterinary costs—and these funds are earmarked specifically to only cover the veterinary expenses incurred by private citizens who take stray animals to certain contracted veterinarians before bringing them to the shelter.

SAS’ veterinary expenses total up to $100,000 per year. The Seattle Animal Shelter is providing vet care for more animals than ever before. Proceeds from the 2007 Furry 5K (and other fundraisers), coupled with private donations, helped make that possible. However, the Help the Animals Fund relies solely on donations from individuals, companies and SAS fundraising events such as the Furry 5K, so we continue to need everyone’s help to maintain the fund. Without the Help the Animals Fund, many of our shelter animals would be considered “lost causes” and immediately euthanized.

All of the proceeds from Furry 5K will go to the Help the Animals Fund. All donations to the fund are tax deductible.
